摘要:We are trying to investigate the effect of the gender composition of occupation on earnings and promotion. Using Current Population Survey (CPS) data from 1993-2010, we firstly estimate the impact of proportion female in an occupation (feminization) on wages, paying close attention to the role of occupational characteristics. To control for the potential heterogeneity, we applied longitudinal analysis using the constructed panel data, supplemented with longer panel data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79). We found the negative effects of occupational feminization were more robust in NLSY79 data, suggesting evidence of the lingering effects of past discrimination.  Male “tokens” were found to be more likely to be promoted, but again, the effect is taken away when unobserved heterogeneity or skills are considered.
