In this paper, we separately examine the economic determinants of pollution related agreements and resource related agreements. Pollution related agreements mainly deal with pollution affecting air, land, oceans, or freshwater system. Resource related agreements include those dealing with natural resource, habitat, freshwater resource, ocean, and species. The former category addresses various forms of pollution, while the latter one mainly focuses on the conservation of natural resources. We find that economic size, distance, trade agreements, and bilateral trade flows have statistically significant effects on countries’ coordination on both pollution related agreements and resource related agreements. These results are most robust for the environmental agreements between a small numbers of countries. In addition, we find the evidence that countries’ cooperation on pollution agreements may contribute to their cooperation on resource agreements and vice versus.
