要:China has achieved great success in economic development by implementing special economic zones (SEZs) programs. The establishments of SEZs have not only attracted capital investment but also led to changes in job opportunities. This analysis investigates the impact of SEZs on local human capital investment over 1980-2009 in China. Comparing cohorts among counties that established SEZs at different times, we find that introducing a SEZ increases high school enrollment by 2.6 percentage points. The increased GDP explains little of the effect, but the job demand in SEZs exhibits significant impact: more demand for high-school (middle-school) graduates encourages (discourages) high-school enrollment.
