20201225日下午, 经济管理研究中心(CEFMS)第79期学术研讨会在水上教学楼210室顺利举行,中南财经政法大学工商管理学院助理教授王萍老师应CEFMS的邀请报告了工作论文“Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Consumption of Animal-source Foods in Tanzania”。

[Seminar 79 Spotlight] Assistant Professor Ping Wang (Zhongnan University of Economics and Law): Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Consumption of Animal-source Foods in Tanzania

On December 25th, 2020, Center for Economics, Finance and Management Studies (CEFMS) held the 79th seminar in classroom 210, Shuishang Teaching Building. Assistant Professor Ping Wang from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law gave a speech about her working paper, “Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Consumption of Animal-source Foods in Tanzania”. Dr. Ping Wang graduated from Auburn University, and her research field of interests includes agricultural international trade, food market and consumption, and development economics. She has published research on international journals like Applied Economics, Marine Resource Economics.

The paper aims to study the pattern of household level Animal-source Foods (ASFs) consumption in Tanzania, identifying spatial and temporal trends of consumption changes. At the same time, the paper applies the censored Quadratic Almost-Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) model to estimate price and expenditure elasticities. In particular, the ASFs refers to fish, beef, chicken, lamb and pork. Making use of the Tanzania National Panel Data from 2008-2015, the paper finds that consumption of ASFs has been increasing steadily, and the consumption pattern is spatially different. Income and demographic variables affect the likelihood of household food consumption of fish and meat products. Additionally, the paper suggests there is evident difference in the price elasticities of different ASFs, e.g., only the price elasticities for lamb and pork is higher than 1.

In the Q&A part, faculties and students from CEFMS discussed with Dr. Ping Wang about a series of issues, for example, the importance to zoom in the sample to the extremely poor cohort and the comparative importance of individual level consumption with the household level consumption.
